If you’re an American, odds are you haven’t heard of many of the brands listed on this list. Still, you’d be surprised by their notoriety and fame and might want to consider them for your next big purchase. Either way, here are some of the best and lesser-known car brands out there.

1. Facel Vega

Facel Vega was a French manufacturer that made luxury car parts. After World War II, they started producing complete automobiles of their own. Even though they ceased production in 1964, they remain an important part of automotive history.

2. Monteverdi

A Swiss car brand established in 1967, Monteverdi produced high-performance luxury cars. They produced exclusive vehicles in small numbers due to the founder of the company supposedly being very hard to get along with. The company ended its operations in 1980, although Monteverdi unsuccessfully tried to get back into the car scene in 1992 by building two prototypes that now reside in the Monteverdi Museum in Basel.

3. Tatra

Tatra is one of the world’s oldest car manufacturers. Founded in 1850 as a wagon producer, they transitioned into cars in the 20th century. Their cars were very popular as government vehicles, but more recently, they have gained popularity with their immaculate trucks.

4. Spyker

Originally founded in 1880, Spyker produced high-end cars and airplanes until they closed their doors in 1920. A few decades later, they started up again and became famous for making exotic sports cars that resemble airplanes. Today, they have gone through multiple bankruptcies and are currently no longer operational.

5. Delahaye

A family-owned automobile company, Delahaye was one of the most exclusive luxury car makers in France. Even though the company was doing great, it started to have major setbacks due to the Second World War. They finally closed at the end of 1954, taking their legendary cars along with them.

6. Hispano-Suiza

Hispano-Suiza is a Spanish automotive company founded in 1904. They started out as manufacturers of car parts and aircraft engines and eventually began making their own luxury cars. The company is still very much alive today, and they continue to make modern, exclusive, and luxurious cars.

7. Stutz

An American luxury car manufacturer established in 1911, Stutz was renowned for its high-performing cars and engineering innovations. The brand unfortunately ceased operations during the Great Depression.

Bitter is a German car brand founded in 1971. Their main focus is luxury sports cars. They are currently fully operational and very popular in Europe for their luxurious looks, high performance, and classy interiors.

9. Allard

Allard cars were said to be ahead of their time in performance. Established in 1945, this British car manufacturer was known for combining high-performance engines with lightweight chassis. The company closed back in 1961 due to failure to evolve with the times but was reopened again in 2012, building cars almost exactly to the original specifications of the 1950s.

Panhard was a French car manufacturer that began as one of the first car makers. They were most known for their innovative engineering and lightweight construction of cars.
