20 Cars With Features That Make You Go “Why?”

But Why?

In today’s modern era, there are a lot of things cars can do. From high-end safety features to unnecessary but cool artificial intelligence additions, driving has never been better. However, some of these car features are going to leave you scratching your head and wondering what the point of them ever was.

1. Tesla Model S

Definitely one of the more questionable features you wouldn’t even consider to exist in a car. The Tesla Model S has a Tesla Toy Box app that lets you make farting noises. They even went as far as letting you choose which seat makes the noise.

2. Jeep Wrangler

A feature in some Jeeps that makes no sense to most is making the windows out of plastic. The idea was that the material is more flexible than glass. This, however, comes with a big issue: plastic is extremely easy to scratch, which is very noticeable and compromises visibility significantly.

3. Volkswagen Beetle

Some Beetles have a built-in flower vase next to the steering wheel. Some say that the idea behind it was to put a real flower inside for a more natural smell in the car. Others say it’s way too random and weird.

4. Chevrolet Camaro

Despite having decent space inside the trunk, the opening itself is unnecessarily small. It was definitely an odd stylistic choice, and one that made it very impractical to put bigger items inside the trunk.

5. Toyota C-HR

This Toyota model has a unique rear door handle positioning, for lack of a better word. The handles are located near the roof of the car. Lots of people find it weird and fairly impractical.

6. Lexus LS

Some Lexus LS models have a shiatsu massage function built into the seat. The massage itself is very awkward and barely makes any impact. If anything, it makes the driver more distracted, which can definitely be dangerous.

7. McLaren Speedtail

The driver's seat in this car is located in the middle, as opposed to the left side of the car. It’s clearly designed this way as a tribute to the McLaren F1. This can be very confusing and hard to get used to for a new driver.

8. Lamborghini Aventador

Starting this car feels like finding a hidden, dangerous button. It is hidden under a red cover, making it look like a button you are never supposed to press. The idea was that it resembles a fighter-jet-style red-covered button.

9. Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan’s sound symposer is a feature that was intended to minimize disturbing noises. This may sound like a good idea to some, but many find the noises it actually makes to be weird. It turns your Porsche into a fake futuristic-sounding electric vehicle.

10. Subaru XT

The now very old 1985 Subaru XT had a very unique feature. The steering wheel was shaped like a joystick, and the gearshift resembled an aircraft-inspired design. Although some people are avid classic car collectors and find this intriguing, others find it very weird.

11. Ford Flex

This car might just have one of the weirdest features built into the rear console: an actual working in-car refrigerator and freezer. It might be useful for bringing frozen groceries home, but many people are left in disbelief that this is really a thing.

12. Fiat Multipla

This car's interior just feels and looks wrong. The dashboard design is just bizarre, and there are three front seats in a very compact car. Not only is this weird, but it’s very uncomfortable for the driver to safely steer the car.

13. Pagani Huayra

The Pagani Huayra has an interesting aesthetic addition on the car's exterior. Active aerodynamic flaps were added with the idea of adapting to the speed of the car for better aerodynamics. In action, this actually looks like a bird flapping its wings more than a car part.

14. Nissan Cube

The Nissan Cube’s rear window is something that the majority of people find extremely weird. It is asymmetrical, looks out of place, and is very expensive to replace or repair. It also creates a slight distortion on the driver’s side, which is a very dangerous and unnecessary feature of this car.

15. Toyota Century

Similar to one of the previously mentioned features, the Toyota Century has a massage feature, this time in the rear passenger’s seats. Even though this seems like a somewhat good idea, there is a catch: the massage is specifically and exclusively made for the rear passenger’s calves.

16. Tesla Model X

Another Tesla on the list, this one has to do with the Falcon Wing Doors. The idea was to make getting in and out of the car easier, especially in a tight parking spot. To this day, this feature has had reported issues of not being able to close, glitching and reopening to try to close again, and sometimes just taking ages to finally close.

17. BMW Z1

This old BMW had a very interesting and unique feature. The doors opened by sliding down and collapsing into themselves. Some find this quirk to be cool; others think it’s unnecessary and an expensive repair waiting to happen.

18. Chevrolet Corvette C7

An interesting feature of this car is something that you might not expect. There is a hidden button inside the cabin that opens the glovebox. Although the idea seems like a feature that protects your valuables inside the glovebox, it is just an unnecessary addition.

19. Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade is filled with Easter eggs all over and throughout the car. These include logos, maps, and references to the history of Jeep. While interesting, these serve no functional purpose whatsoever.

20. Peel P50

This vintage car had a major unique feature: the reverse gear—or rather, lack thereof. This car was so small and light that the only way to go in reverse was to literally get out, pick the car up, and physically turn it around.
